Creating a Scene in Flyover Country
In the mid-2000s, Des Moines experienced growing pains and needed an outlet to fill the city’s creative void. The Des Moines Social Club Board had a vision to develop a cultural and artistic hub, which included community classes, a theater, a live music venue, a coffee shop, and an art gallery, housed inside of a 1930s abandoned Art Deco firehouse. The objective was lofty, and fundraising was an issue. Creating a successful hard launch was paramount to attracting more investors and engaging the community. During this time, I served as lead designer on the marketing team as well as on the Des Moines Social Club Board. The unveiling event, which featured David Byrne of The Talking Heads, was an enormous success, attracting over 4,000 attendees and raising upwards of 1.3 million dollars.
Completed marketing efforts for the Des Moines Social Club’s grand opening, which appealed to people of various cultural and age demographics. David Byrne from the Talking Heads, pictured right, addresses the crowd at the opening of the Social Club at Firehouse #1.
